This is the method I use with my 1-1 nutrition clients.

🥑 At least 3 months of solid nutrition targeted for fertility. Pregnancy is one of the most intense things your body goes through your entire life.

Having the proper nutrition before hand is key not only for baby’s health, but for yours too.

🧪 Not having regular cycles? Not ovulating? Dealing with constant bloating or digestive issues 💩? We use functional lab testing to see EXACTLY what’s going on internally

🧫 By using these labs (I incorporate gut health tests, hormone tests and micronutrient tests)- we get a very clear picture and can use targeted supplements and nutrition so you’re not just guessing at what the issue is.

😴 Just because I’m a dietitian, doesn’t mean we only talk about food. We focus on your holistic health: this includes sleep, stress and movement.

Shout out to @fertilityfriday for raising awareness on this topic with her incredible book - The Fifth Vital Sign.

Just like your pulse, temperature, respiration rate, and blood pressure - your menstrual cycle is a vital sign to your health.

Guess what? If things are off as in - having wild PMS symptoms, irregular cycles, NO cycle, super long cycles - it's a hint (well, really a SHOUT) that something is going on with your health.

I remember in college, my period ghosted me. I didn't even think about it at all. But at the time, my body was telling me I was exercising wayyyyy too much (hello daily practice for the Indian dance team) and not eating enough.

I see this all the time - 1200 calorie diets?
Trying keto for a few months?
Giving up gluten and dairy?

Yeah, you don't need to deprive yourself in order to be healthy.

So before you even start #ttc - think about how you can regulate your cycles. Because likely, something else is going on.

I'm breaking down all the various causes of female fertility challenges - and trust me, it's a lot! So be sure to save this post to refer back to.

Let's take a look:

🩸OVULATORY
This is the majority of fertility issues. Whether it's anovulatory cycles, PCOS, poor egg quality, or a luteal phase defect.

If you fall into this category, the good news is that there's a lot to be done nutritionally to help you regulate your cycles, ovulate, manage your PCOS symptoms, and improve egg quality.

❤️METABOLIC
This covers everything from a thyroid disorder to liver or renal disease.

🧘🏻‍♀️PELVIC
This includes inflammation like Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), endometriosis (which accounts for about 5% of cases), structural abnormalities, and uterine or fallopian tube adhesions. This can also include fibroids - however, these are not always a problem.

🍊CERVICAL
This accounts for roughly 3% of cases and can include hostile mucus aka - a hostile environment to sperm in terms of containing antibodies, pH imbalance or viscosity; infections, or surgical damage.

😷IMMUNE MEDIATED
This category still has a lot of research to be done around it, and includes autoimmune diseases, anti-thyroid antibodies and anti-phospholipid antibodies.

Trying to conceive can make you suddenly hate yourself, question yourself, or blame yourself.

STOP.

Throughout this journey, you're going to learn how to mother yourself. Be gentle with yourself.

Would you ever say those things to a friend?

I'm guessing the answer is no...

Go easy on yourself babe, you're doing the very best you can.
